On Monday, January 11, Ohio State played Alabama in the College Football National Championship. Going into the game Alabama was the favorite. The game was expected to be a shootout as both teams have very strong offenses.

On Ohio State’s first drive of the game, their star running back, Trey Sermon, went down with an injury. He suffered a left collarbone injury, for which he would go to the hospital for. This was a heavy blow for the Ohio State team. One senior from BHS, Ben Albrecht, says, “The National Championship game was hyped up, but a first play injury changed the game before it could even start.” In the last game Justin Fields got injured. This game it seemed like he was still in pain, but was able to play through it and play well.

As most people thought, it was a high scoring game. The final score of the game was 52-24 in Alabama’s favor. Ohio State was sticking in the game until the second quarter when Alabama scored 28 points compared to just 7 from Ohio State. Ohio State won the first College Football Playoffs back in 2014. This would have been Ohio State’s second time winning the College Football Playoffs.

Recently, Ohio sports have been having a run of success. Late in 2020, the Columbus Crew won the MLS cup. The Cleveland Browns ended their long playoff drought and won their first playoff in a long time. They could still go even farther. It was disappointing to see the Buckeyes lose, but it was still a great game.
