Star Wars is a massive franchise that has had moviegoers fascinated for decades with its fascinating technology, story lines, characters, and concepts. However, the series just finished its most recent trilogy and the franchise appears to be done making more movies to add to the series at least for now. After spending the time to watch the movies in chronological order I decided to make my own ranking from worst to best of each movie. Here is my very biased and completely subjective list
11th: Star Wars V The Empire Strikes Back
Although I love the originals for the series they created, they do suffer in my rankings from simple plots, older film technology, and less unique ideas. This movie has its moments like when Luke trains with Master Yoda or when Lando helps free Han and Leia, but overall the plot is boring. Most of the movie consists of running away without hardly any development. Although it is still a good movie, it deserves last in my rankings.
10th: Star Wars VIII The Last Jedi
As many people know, the last trilogy is set up in a very similar way to the original trilogy, so this movie resembles V very closely. Sadly this means it suffers from many of the same issues. The plot is jumbled and much of the movie is wasted on a pointless side quest to find a “master codebreaker” who they don’t even find, but when they do find a guy he betrays them almost immediately. All in all it has its moments thankfully due to cooler fighting scenes and technology. But it’s also pretty poorly written.
9th: Star Wars IV A New Hope
The movie that started it all. I love this movie for the universe it created and the ideas it implemented, but watching the movie 43 years later just isn’t the same. This movie suffers from a simplistic plot because no one knew if it would have sequels or success in the movie theatres, and so much of the movie is just introducing concepts most Star Wars fans have learned in other movies. It makes an alright standalone movie, but overall its plot is rushed and not as interesting as it could have been.
8th: Star Wars II Attack of the Clones
I really like this movie because of the way it ties things from the original trilogy into this movie and sets up the future moments of the franchise. It also has some absolutely incredible battle scenes and some really fascinating moments. However… the awkward love scenes between Anakin and Padme are just so horrible. The lines are poorly written and the acting isn’t great. Without those scenes this movie would likely be top three, but I don’t want to have to feel uncomfortable watching these scenes every time.
7th: Star Wars I The Phantom Menace
This was a pretty solid movie all around. In this movie we got to see awesome pod racing, fascinating world building, Qui-Gon Jin being awesome, and an incredible fight with Darth Maul. Now I get it, Jar Jar Binks is the worst, but even he has his moments in this movie. The plot isn’t the most thrilling but overall you have to be pretty happy with the way this movie sets up everything that comes after it.
6th: Star Wars VII The Force Awakens
What I really like about this movie is the fascinating characters it introduces for the new trilogy and a lot of really cool fight scenes. Watching Kylo Ren throw a temper tantrum every time something doesn’t go his way is hilarious and who doesn’t love BB8? However, what I don’t love is that the plot of this movie is the EXACT copy of Star Wars IV. Watch them back to back and you will realize just how similar these movies are. If they could’ve made this movie feel more genuine just a little bit more it could’ve ranked a lot higher on my list.
5th: Solo: A Star Wars Story
Admittedly I like Solo a lot more than other people, but I thought it was a pretty neat movie. As a standalone it profited from being able to be a little more free with its plot so it had a fun new feel as a heist movie of sorts rather than running away from the empire like most Star Movies seem to feel like. I really liked seeing the Han Solo origin story, and I think the movie overall had a very fun vibe to it, even if the plot seemed a little disjointed here and there.
4th: Star Wars IX The Rise of Skywalker
The overall climax of seven movies worth of effort and hours upon hours of film culminated in this movie and was… good. The end of the movie was pretty cool with the massive skyfight as they tried to take down all of the star destroyers as Kylo Ren and Rey battled Emperor Palpatine, but before that point it was a little convoluted. The search for some wayfinder seemed a little unnecessary and they introduced some unnecessary characters. Also Kylo Ren and Rey kissing at the end was waaayyyy to forced and made everyone uncomfortable. But overall it was a good movie and a pretty epic final.
3rd: Star Wars VI Return of the Jedi
This movie made a great climax of the original trilogy from the very beginning as the main characters save Han Solo from Jabba the Hut in stunning fashion. Following that, the fight on the surface of Endor while the battle in space was happening simultaneously was really cool to watch. Other cool moments include racing on speeders between the trees, Yoda’s death, and the final moment when Darth Vader turns.
2nd: Star Wars III Revenge of the Sith
Although this movie is sad to watch due to the destruction of the Jedi order, Anakin’s turn to the dark side, and Palpatine’s rise to power, overall it was very well done. The movie was brilliantly set up for the Emperor to make a quick grab for power and send everything toppling down in stunning fashion. Plus it had great moments such as Obi Wan battling General Grievous, the death of Mace Windu, and the incredible final fight between Anakin and Obi Wan on the erupting volcano planet.
1st: Rogue One
This is the best star wars movie ever and there is no changing my mind. The movie starts off great with fascinating characters. Literally every one of these characters has such a cool story arc from beginning to end. Beyond that, the whole movie is an epic race to find the death star plans and it leads to stunning moments and fight scenes. In the end it all accumulates in the coolest scene ever as they climb the tower to steal the plans and a massive battle happens on both the land and in space. Although it is sad to see each of these characters die, it is satisfying to see them sacrifice for a cause they believe in. Cool moments include flying the ship away from an exploding planet, the whole planet battle, General Akbar’s hammerhead maneuver, and the way the end of the movie ties into Star Wars IV.
