The new vaccines seem to be all anyone can talk about these days. Between the teachers at Beavercreek getting vaccinated and recent news articles all about the recent developments, vaccines have been the talk of the town for weeks now. However, there is a new COVID-19 vaccine that has been created to fight all strands of the virus.
First off, this vaccine is called the Janssen vaccine and is administered in a single shot. Unlike Maderna, which is distributed in two shots, the Janssen vaccine only has one shot to deliver a strand of DNA into the body to make the protein of the coronavirus. By administering this strand, the body begins to fight of the virus before someone is actually infected and will continue to maintain the antibodies in case that person contracts the virus.
Not only does this vaccine assist with the prevention of COVID-19, it also will help make vaccines more widely available for those in need. The FDA states that “The authorization of this vaccine expands the availability of vaccines, the best medical prevention method for COVID-19, to help us in the fight against this pandemic, which has claimed over half a million lives in the United States.” This is the third vaccine that the FDA has authorized with their rigorous testing and standards for safety, effectiveness, and manufacturing quality.
Finally, the vaccine is very effective. According to the FDA, “Overall, the vaccine was approximately 67% effective in preventing moderate to severe/critical COVID-19 occurring at least 14 days after vaccination and 66% effective in preventing moderate to severe/critical COVID-19 occurring at least 28 days after vaccination.
