On September 1st 2023, Jimmy Buffett died. He was a famous singer who sang songs like ‘Margaritaville’, ‘Come Monday’, ‘Cheeseburger From Paradise,’ and ‘It’s Five O’ Clock Somewhere’. He even owned a chain of restaurants called ‘Margaritaville’.
James William Buffett was born on December 25th 1946 to Mary Lorraine and James Buffett Jr. He was exposed to sailing as a child because his father and grandfather were both sailors. This is reflected in Buffett’s music later on.
Buffett graduated from Pearl Community College in 1969 with a Bachelors in History and moved down to New Orleans. He couldn’t find a job in music so interestingly he ended up working as a journalist.
In the 1970s, Buffett’s bad luck with music started to turn a corner. He signed with ABC/Dunhill Records. In 1977, he released his breakthrough hit ‘Margaritaville’ which was about the laid back beach life.
Buffett’s music has been described as folk and country. He uses clever wordplay in his songs like in his 1996 ‘Jamaica Mistaica’, which was written after the Jamaican authorities shot down his plane, mistakenly thinking he had drugs. They later apologized for this.
But Buffett’s ventures didn’t just stop with music. In 1987, a restaurant named Margaritaville opened up in Florida. It is now a chain restaurant and is operating all over the world.
On September 1st, Jimmy Buffett died of skin cancer but he left a legacy of music behind. Just remember, it’s 5 o’clock somewhere.
