This year Beavercreek High School has implemented a new mandatory resource that allows students to put their phones away during educational learning time. Many students and parents have been slightly enraged at this mandate and many do not agree with how the school is navigating House Bill 250. Essentially, schools all around Ohio are similarly limiting or completely abolishing phone usage within the school. Yondr pouches are just stage one of this bill, and there will be some roadblocks to get through with this being the first year that Beavercreek has used them. In an interview with Mr. Scott, one of the assistant principals at BHS, had this to say about the new pouches: “The objective of the Yondr pouches is to create a phone-free environment to eliminate distractions. I’ve noticed that it helps students to be present in learning and peer interactions”. He also stated that “An IT worker came into the school this past week and stated that he had never seen the lunchroom be that loud before.” This shows that overall peer interaction has improved and also learning has become more abundant without the imposition of a phone. Overall, the pouches’ intentions are very beneficial in many ways to the BHS students’ educational careers. Without phones, students can focus on a myriad of things such as teacher instruction, personal assignments, tests, and classwork. As Mae Harrison, a junior at Beavercreek High School, put it, “This will definitely help me improve my grades and make me less addicted to my phone.” So in the end, the Yondr pouches may be doing more good than harm.
