When people think of women’s tennis the main figures that come to mind are Serena and Venus Williams. Serena Williams revolutionized women’s tennis and highly popularized the sport for this generation and past ones. But looking past the Williams sisters, little is known about women’s tennis, the complexity of the sport, or what it means to people. Tennis, from an outside perspective, may seem like an effortless and unchallenging sport, but by taking a deeper look into the perception of tennis from a tennis player we can get a better understanding of the intricacy of tennis. In an interview with McKenna Skouson, a junior at BHS, she stated, “I really love the sport. It brings out like a new focus in me and I love how I get to build connections with the girls on the team because I have to trust them when they are my doubles partners. Tennis looks a lot easier than it is. It is very complex. It is not as easy as just hitting the ball. Its’ complexity is what makes it fun for me because I am so driven to become better and I like that it challenges me.” She also continued to mention that the team, “is doing pretty good. We’ve had a decent amount of wins and losses.” Overall, looking past the surface level of tennis there is a deeper connection that the players get from playing the sport itself and the sport is very underestimated in its difficulty level. Their next home game is Tuesday, September 3 against Fairmont High School at 4 P.M., and if you have the chance you should go support and appreciate the intricate sport of women’s tennis.
