Recently there have been threats of a government shutdown in the United States. Government shutdowns typically occur when “ funding legislation required to finance the federal government is not enacted before the next fiscal year begins” (en.wikipedia.org). In a government shutdown, all essential federal agencies such as medical care, air traffic control, law enforcement, disaster aid, etc. all continue to be in service. On the other hand, non-mandatory federal agencies such as national parks, museums, restrooms, visitors’ centers, campgrounds, information kiosks, trash removal, and interpretative programs, etc. are all shut down. This is so that more government funding goes towards the important services. President Donald Trump was elected as president in 2025, meaning that he now has the ability to pass bills. In 2025, to keep this event from happening, Trump signed a bill that will fund the government for six months. In doing so, the government will be given enough money to avoid shutting down any of its businesses or services.
