Communities are the building blocks of our society. Without communities or groups of people with common interests, we are left with untapped potential because alone we are good, but together we are great. Here at BHS, we have various communities and teams that help promote growth among our students. Speech and Debate is one example of a community that exemplifies determination, integrity, and friendship. When speaking with Vanessa Watts, an 11th grader at BHS on the Beavercreek Speech and Debate team, she said she enjoys speech and debate a lot. I do not just appreciate the inviting community, but I like how we bond over similar topics and have fun debates. I like how we all do different things, so we all come to things and learn. Speech and debate are r public speaking and are good skills to hone in the future. I love how inclusive Speech and Debate is; you do not have to be super smart. There are all different levels of smartness here on the team, and everyone is doing brilliant things. To get another perspective, Ella Schrader stated, “I enjoy the community aspect of all of the schools. Everyone is very kind. Speech and Debate also helps you get over and allows you to meet many new people all doing something they love”. Speech and Debate is a great exemplification of an inclusive and positive community that encourages our students’ growth, no matter who they are. Speech and Debate provides people with public speaking knowledge and helps prepare them for the future, but it also provides a safe space for people to express themselves through a speech and share their passions with others. Finally, when describing speech and debate, “Speech and Debate is kinda like a team sport of self-reflection”.
