This week, from October 20 to 24, Beavercreek High School is having Red Ribbon Week to promote drug prevention and awareness. During Red Ribbon Week, schools and other organizations participate in events that raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse and help promote a drug-free life. Mrs. Seilhamer, a teacher at BHS, stated, “Red Ribbon Week is the largest and longest-running drug awareness and prevention program in the US. This annual alcohol, tobacco, drug, and violence prevention campaign is observed October 23-31 each year and aims to promote drug, alcohol, and violence prevention through education and awareness.” This cause is symbolized by a red ribbon in honor of a DEA Special Agent named Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who was murdered in 1985 by a Mexican drug cartel. Camarena joined the DEA to make a difference and dedicated his life to ending the destruction that both drugs and alcohol cause. Mrs. Seilhamer stated, “After his death, angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness on the death and destruction caused by drugs in America.” This week at BHS and Ferguson, students can participate in spirit days, sign a red ribbon stating their reason for staying drug-free, and take part in a Kahoot game during AVP on Friday to raise awareness about the dangers of drug use. Mrs. Seilhamer also mentioned, “Students can also attend the Network Club outing after school on Friday, where they support each other in their efforts to remain drug-free.” During this outing, students will also be eating festive fall treats and painting pumpkins. To help support drug awareness, there are multiple activities students can participate in at BHS this week!
