It’s officially week seven of the college football season, meaning we’re approximately at the halfway point of the year. Now that we all have a decent idea of who this year’s powerhouses are, let’s discuss who has the best chance at competing for this year’s National Championship.

Unsurprisingly, Alabama is still at the top of rankings and looks primed for a third consecutive championship appearance. After falling to Clemson in last year’s title game, head coach Nick Saban will likely be looking to redeem himself, and he has the means to do so. The Crimson Tide has been destroying its opponents thus far this year, and, barring an unexpected upset, this team should cruise into the number one seed in the playoffs.

Sitting at number two is the reigning national champion team, Clemson. After losing several play-makers last year, including quarterback Deshaun Watson, several experts were wary of predicting this team to make the playoffs. Six weeks in, however, the Tigers are proving a lot of people wrong as they’ve defeated three top 15 teams and are looking strong under the tutelage of head coach Dabo Swinney. As long as this team can keep playing at the same level, they should easily win the ACC conference and make the playoffs.

Penn State, led by star its running back, Saquon Barkley, sits at number three in the rankings and has looked strong up to this point, but they really haven’t played any worthwhile teams. Upcoming games against Michigan, Ohio State, and Michigan State should give us a better idea of this team’s true talent.

Past the top three teams, there are still several questions to be answered. After Oklahoma’s loss to Iowa State, there is no clear-cut number four team. For now, Georgia holds the number four spot, but how far can true freshman quarterback Jake Fromm take them? How about Washington at number five? Is this team as good as last year?

My prediction is a third consecutive Alabama and Clemson match-up in the title game, and while I like the Tigers, I believe Alabama will redeem itself after last year’s game and pull off the win.
