Since 1976, the United States has dedicated February to being Black History Month. We take this month to bring awareness to the struggle of bringing equality regardless of race to America and remember those who sacrificed their lives for equality.

In 1954, the Supreme Court declared segregation unconstitutional. In the years following the decision, Rosa Parks would stand (sit) for equality, the Little Rock Nine would attend a previously all-white school, and Martin Luther King Jr. would rise up as the leader of the movement.

MLK Jr. emerged as a leader during the Montgomery Bus Boycott which began after Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat because of the color of her skin. Other less known and controversial leaders, such as Malcolm X, contributed their own efforts in solving the same problem of racism in America. Junior Noah Kelly said,“These people are heroes and deserve to be honored.” America may not yet be rid of racism, but the only way to get rid of such a way of thinking is to bring awareness to the struggles of people in both the past and present.
