Most people are familiar with the school’s solution to keep students from accessing inappropriate websites: block them. This is mostly effective as it keeps students from seeing anything that the school would identify as bad; however, it’s unclear as to whether this practice hurts students. School is, most importantly, an institution of learning and using blanket techniques to block websites could be be detrimental to students’ learning. Junior Sam Ford says, “I like learning about random topics whenever I have free time, and it’s really annoying that I can’t get access to information because of blocked sites.”

Virtually every YouTube video is blocked; fortunately, teachers are able to unblock certain videos if they are needed for a project or educational tools. The best and simplest solution to the problem of over-censoring seems to be to give teachers more power to allow websites. Perhaps in the future, students could ask any teacher to allow access to a site after appropriate explanation. It is unfortunate that schools are having to take on more ‘parenting’ roles; choosing how kids should grow up instead of having parent input. In the modern age, there are few ways to avoid the schools having such a large control over students’ lives.
