Mark Zuckerberg, current CEO of Facebook, testified this week before Congress for his company’s involvement in the Cambridge Analytica data breach. The data of about 87 million Facebook users, mostly from the United States, was obtained around and after 2014 by Cambridge Analytica, a company dedicated to “changing audience behavior.” Junior Sam Ford said, “I think social media is overbearing and their influence should probably be brought down.”

Cambridge Analytica is a British consulting firm that uses data to influence commercial and political climates. The company allegedly used data that they obtained in 2014 to influence the 2016 Presidential election to favor Donald Trump. Congress has questioned Zuckerberg as to whether his company can be trusted with the information of millions of Americans. European countries are already taking steps to restrict the ability of companies like Facebook to gather citizens’ data, and the United States may consider similar steps in the future. For now, Facebook is taking steps to improve its own functioning without legislative influence.
