Imagine your house being eaten by lava and a cloud of smoke engulfing your neighborhood. This image has become a reality for many residents of Hawaii with the recent eruption of Kilauea. For a little over a week, hot lava and toxic fumes have emerged from the lava lake in the volcano and trickled down almost 1,000 feet to residential areas. The most recent fear of Hawaii’s inhabitants is the chance of fiery boulders being shot miles out of Kilauea due to the amount of lava slowly decreasing in the volcano’s lava lake. As the lava levels decrease, molten rock has a greater chance of meeting the groundwater levels, which would trigger an explosion. Something of this nature could be the largest volcanic explosion in roughly 100 years. The situation in Hawaii could get significantly worse in the next week and consequently endanger the lives of many. So far, the evacuation of about 2,000 residents has kept everyone safe and prevented any fatalities and serious injuries. The actions of Kilauea over the next couple of weeks could be something we won’t see again for another 100 years.
