Yesterday at 3:00 p.m. NASA’s latest rover to Mars, InSight, landed. Many people have called the landing “the seven minutes of terror.” After about six and a half months of traveling to the planet, the rover had to pass through the think martian atmosphere before landing. The rover had to travel at a speed of 12000 miles per hour before slowing down to a speed of 5 miles per hour before impact. When it landed, it became NASA’s eighth perfect landing on the planet. Which adds to their track record for putting spacecraft on the planet. Since it landed, the rover has already started its two year mission. The main purpose of the mission is for the rover to listen to Marsquakes (like Earthquakes) to learn more about the planet’s interior. Over the next two or three months, InSight will deploy a seismometer to listen to the quakes on the planet. When I talked to Megan Diltz about InSight she said, “In the next few months the information InSight gives might change the way we think about Mars. It’s very cool.”
