As winter approaches, students have to be cautious about the snowy weather that comes with the cold. This means knowing how to drive safely in snowy conditions, avoiding common mistakes students make while driving in the winter, and making sure your car is prepared for the upcoming snow. Officer Unroe, one of the school’s resource officers, stated some tips for driving in wintery weather: “Remember to reduce your speed, give yourself enough distance between you and the cars in front of you, be mindful of icy roads that may just look wet, and watch out for black ice.” One of the most common mistakes made when driving in questionable conditions is overcorrection. To correct this, you want to look at where you are going to go and steer into the skid. Officer Unroe mentioned, “Make sure, before pulling out into traffic, that your tires might spin, so when pulling out of a driveway or parking lot, you might spin, creating a longer way for you to get up to speed or get out of the way of other drivers.” Most importantly, make sure that your car is well prepared before the winter starts. This includes checking everything throughout your car so you can avoid getting into a situation when this bad weather begins. Mr. Unroe stated, “Make sure you have your washer fluid filled, check your tire pressure, and make sure to clean your windshield and rear windshield completely off before driving.” Although these things may seem minimal, they may save your life as we encounter the winter weather.
