On March 5, Beavercreek High School’s Student Council hosted its annual blood drive at BHS. With a turnout of 106 students and staff signing up to donate blood this year, it was a success. There were many qualifications students had to meet to be able to participate in the blood drive, including the weight for their height range and age (at least 17 or older). The morning of the blood drive, students and staff had to stay hydrated and well-fed to be eligible to donate. All of the blood donations went to Versiti blood center and will be used immediately due to the current blood shortage. Although the blood drive was a hit, there certainly were a couple of road bumps along the way. Anna Macdonald, BHS senior and the treasurer for Beaverceek’s Student Council, stated, “Snow days, alternate schedules, and various student council duties made it difficult to man the sign-up table and motivate students to sign up.” These days may have also affected the turnout of people who signed up to donate. Compared to last year, fewer students and staff signed up, with 132 people signing up last year and only 106 this year. With this being said, BHS’s Student Council is still satisfied with the final turnout. Macdonald stated, “While we could have had more students and staff participate, we are happy and grateful for everyone who did! Beavercreek High School is one of the largest high school donation sites for Versiti, so all donors helped make a successful Blood Drive.” Even though everything went as planned, there are still some changes that will be made for next year’s blood drive. Macdonald said, “The event itself ran very smoothly! We did not have many issues getting students from class, and Versiti is wonderful to work with for the actual donation process. If there is anything we would do differently next year, it would be to run sign-ups more efficiently to increase the number of participants.” Overall, the blood drive was a great success and showed that the community at Beavercreek High School will do all they can to help. Thank you to every one who donated, as every donation will help save a life!
