As the school year comes to an end, it is time for students who need credits to consider whether to attend summer school or take a credit-recovery class next school year. Mrs. Duley, one of Beavercreek High School’s guidance counselors, stated some of the pros to taking summer school, “Kids can get it done faster because they are just focused on that credit and that credit alone. They don’t have all the other seven classes to think about, so more time can be devoted to that one credit, and unlike credit recovery, no electives have to be given up.” Overall, summer school is a very nice option for students because it allows them to make up the credits without taking up room for another class in their schedule the next year. It also allows students to focus all their time and attention on one subject rather than juggling the other six classes on top of it. Mrs. Duley also stated some of the cons to taking credit recovery classes: “If a student makes up a class through credit recovery, once they are finished with the course, they have to return to a study hall.” This takes up room in students’ schedules, which pushes other classes out. Although summer school has the downside of having to get up early during the summer, Mrs. Duley said that she always recommends taking summer school over credit recovery. She stated, “I would always recommend summer school rather than losing a period during the school year. Unlike credit recovery, once students finish the class they are taking in summer school, they are done.” If you’re a student in need of making up credits, start looking into summer school now!
